Route description

The route we propose will show you very different areas of the Delta. A comprehensive and overwhelmingly beautiful route. First of all, because you have the opportunity to meet a variety of landscapes, from the vegetation of the lakes, the flora and fauna of the Letea Forest, this jungle of the Delta, and Sulina, the nostalgic sea harbor. You will see various ecosystems and you will marvel at the gifts of nature, which you did not even know were so close to us.

Arriving in the Letea Forest, you can admire the massive oaks, with twisted branches and adorned with vines and wild vines, just like the magic trees in childhood story books. That is why it is said that Letea Forest has an appearance close to the magic forests of the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit. Letea Forest gave birth to legends about Achilles, a hero from Greek mythology. It is said that his tomb and temple were on the Letea levee, according to some Greek writings.

But what we really know is that you can step into the northernmost subtropical forest in the world. Yes, you read that right. Nature makes us a great gift and you can admire such an unusual landscape in our country. It is fascinating how the landscape perfectly combines desert vegetation, sand dunes and jungle vegetation with tall, hundreds of years old trees. And in the spring you can see orchid carpets and wild horses grazing quietly.

To get to Sulina we cross the Bărboși Canal. It is said of the Bearded Canal that Lipovans or Ukrainians, formerly called “bearded excavators”, dug it. Hence the name of this channel. On our route, we will pass from the vegetation of levees, to areas with plains, floating islands that move according to the waves. The exotic landscape of the Delta with its lush flora will give you an extraordinary mood of well-being. It's a real therapy. You have the opportunity to see uncommon birds such as black storks, white-tailed eagles, shovels, falcons, bee-eaters or red herons, egrets and dalmatian pelicans. So be ready to have your binoculars, the camera and fully enjoy the richness of nature.

Once in Sulina, you will be able to visit the city, the old free port which is a large chest with stories. To understand its past and get into the mood of the city, you must know that this place marks the early beginning of the European Union. The European Danube Commission was set up here. Then for the first time in Europe, the countries wanted to do something together for the whole continent. In 1870, Sulina became a free international port, without taxes and duties. And this status triggers a flourishing of the city.

You will notice how cosmopolitan the city was through its buildings and the legendary cemetery with pirates and heroes near the beach.

We called it the city between the waters, because you can't get here by other means. Sulina, the easternmost point in the country, also marks the last frontier of Europe. Of course, you will have time to enjoy the sun, the sea and the beach of Sulina, which is wide, wild and offers you the intimacy to relax peacefully. If the water and the sun make you hungry, you can dine at the locals who know how to prepare many fish specialties. So your trip will be a complete one.

Get ready for an unforgettable holiday!
